All about Kizzy

Kizzy has been in kennels for most of her life and before that she was treated cruelly. Basically Kizzy has never known a happy family life and although all the staff love her she has never had anyone to give her one-one affection. Unfortunately Kizzy had not had any formal training before coming to the animal centre but now she has most of her basic commands. She can get a little over-excited and plays very rough if you let her so needs someone who can set her clear rules and make sure she knows her boundaries. Kizzy is food proud and will not let you approach her when eating from her bowl or eating a treat. We manage this in the kennels by making her sit and stay before we put down her food (she is very good at this) and this must be carried on when she finds a new home. New owners just need to be aware that she must be left alone when eating and to let her have her own space. This behaviour is very common in dogs that have been starved, tormented or have had to compete for food as a puppy. For this reason Kizzy cannot be rehomed where there are children. Kizzy was not socialised around other dogs as a pup so doesn't know how to behave appropriately around them. New owners should be able to work on this and get her to a stage where she will ignore other dogs. Training classes are highly recommended. Kizzy just needs a home where she is the only pet so her new owners can devote their time to training and showing her all the affection she has missed out on in the past. She responds well to training and really enjoys learning new things!

Adoption Procedure

Adopting an animal from the Altham animal centre is not as easy as turn up, choose an animal and go home. But don't let that put you off!

The animals in our care are very precious to us and we want to ensure that their new home and owners are suitable, so that the new owner and the animal have the best possible start. With this policy in mind, there are certain things that we need to check. For example, anybody who wishes to adopt an animal will require a home check before the animal can leave the centre.

Please do not expect to turn up, choose a pet and leave. Many people do and feel disapointed that this isn't the procedure.

Here is a quick and simple guide to the adoption process

1 : Visit the animal centre and select an animal

2 : Fill in an adoption Questionnaire

3 : Meet the animal or walk the dog

4 : If meeting is successful, place a reserve fee on the animal

5 : Dogs must be walked twice on seperate occasions

6 : All family members must meet a cat or dog. If other dogs are owned they must be brought to the animal centre to meet with the dog being  adopted

7 : A home visit will be carried out

8 : If the home visit is successful an appointment must be made to collect the animal

9 : When collecting the animal, all adoption paperwork will be completed and the balance of the adoption fee paid. Please bring ID with you

10 : All cats and small animals must be transported in a suitable carrier

11 : All dogs must leave the premises with a suitable collar, dog tag and on a lead

Six to eight weeks after adoption, a follow up home visit will be made to see how the adoption has gone

Important note : Some animals may leave the animal centre before they have been neutered. A free neutering voucher will be issued which must be used within 6 months of the adoption date.
