Adoption Procedure
Adopting an animal from the Altham animal centre is not as easy as turn up, choose an animal and go home. But don't let that put you off!
The animals in our care are very precious to us and we want to ensure that their new home and owners are suitable, so that the new owner and the animal have the best possible start. With this policy in mind, there are certain things that we need to check. For example, anybody who wishes to adopt an animal will require a home check before the animal can leave the centre.
Please do not expect to turn up, choose a pet and leave. Many people do and feel disapointed that this isn't the procedure.
Here is a quick and simple guide to the adoption process
1 : Visit the animal centre and select an animal
2 : Fill in an adoption Questionnaire
3 : Meet the animal or walk the dog
4 : If meeting is successful, place a reserve fee on the animal
5 : Dogs must be walked twice on seperate occasions
6 : All family members must meet a cat or dog. If other dogs are owned they must be brought to the animal centre to meet with the dog being adopted
7 : A home visit will be carried out
8 : If the home visit is successful an appointment must be made to collect the animal
9 : When collecting the animal, all adoption paperwork will be completed and the balance of the adoption fee paid. Please bring ID with you
10 : All cats and small animals must be transported in a suitable carrier
11 : All dogs must leave the premises with a suitable collar, dog tag and on a lead
Six to eight weeks after adoption, a follow up home visit will be made to see how the adoption has gone
Important note : Some animals may leave the animal centre before they have been neutered. A free neutering voucher will be issued which must be used within 6 months of the adoption date.
